turkey point lighthouse

#15

turkey point lighthouse was not on the lighthouse challenge this year because of the mile long hike it takes to get out to the bluff where the lighthouse is, and they didn't know how to make it handicap accessible. but we still wanted to check out it. lighthouse out on a bluff? yes please.
here's the map out to the light.
laura was worried about the hike with her fibromyalgia and the fact that because of our hour long sonic lunch, we were well behind schedule. well, as we were looking at the map a park ranger comes and opens the gate to drive his truck through. i was like, laura this is your chance! so we approached him and i explained to him laura's condition and begged him to take just her, i would be selfless and run my big booty out and meet her there. ;) he kind of hesitated, but he was like, "ok." sa-weet! he ended up taking me too and we got out there in no time, it was such a stroke of luck!

our park ranger friend was heading out there because there was a wedding party and some of the guests were having trouble getting back. thank you, wedding party!

cute little lighthouse gift shop. laura and i got lots of little lighthouse souvie's. magnets everywhere we could, patches, postcards, this years lighthouse challenge t, and last years (for $3) for good measure.
another one of john donahoo's, can you tell?
we had to get a picture with fannie mae salter! she kept this light for 22 years after her husband died, working until she retired at the age of 65. this chic was amazing!
i know i always say this, but i loooove this lighthouse!
it is the perfect height for my fear, not too high but just high enough to be exciting.
i can't imagine climbing those stairs with a copper kettle full of kerosene 4 times a night! go fannie mae!
the location was absolutely beautiful!
the fresnel lens was stolen years ago, so i don't know what this thing is.
the lighthouse sits on a bluff 130 feet above the elk river and the mouth of the chesapeak bay.
laura about gave me a heart attack leaning over to take a picture. danger!
we thought something was funny!
we stayed as long as we thought we possibly could and then had to get going. gorgeousness!
the whole place was beautiful, even the walk.
there were several trails leading down to the water. someday when we have more time (and not sandals) we'll have to explore.
we hustled it back, but a girls gotta take some pictures, right?
we were majorly behind on time after leaving but it was totally worth it!
love this lighthouse!
