Well, hello!

Old friend. Resolutions are coming, not sure what they are yet, but figured I should dust this old girl off. And tell about our Christmas break!

My dads apartment is almost ready and we’ve all been busy busy working towards that goal. We worked all day putting together furniture and then brought this crazy crew home with us. There was much squealing to be had.

Meaghan was a rockstar and basically single handedly put together the bed and dresser. I did the lamp. 🤗

It’s all looking really great!

Thursday Christian and Meaghan watched the girls while we shopped the day away at IKEA, my fav. Then we all unloaded and got right to work putting everything together.

Then papa treated the gang to Salsa’s. Where, sadly, I didn’t get a single picture.

I did get a picture of our delish Christmas dinner. We did appetizers this year and it was perfect. The only thing not shown here were the

Jalepno poppers. So yummy!

Papa bought a Christmas gingerbread train for the girls to do and let’s just say things got fun. Emotions were high and lessons were learned. And after a few days, Addie, who had the biggest gingerbread train emotions, was happy to throw her away. If we can talk about tough situations and learn from them, then it’s all ok.

And oh my heart! My new fav picture!!!

And to round out the absolute awesomeness, some Addie drawing and papa looking on.

Hoping to do a quick crew update soon.

Halloween 2019

I woke up to a crazy storm and can’t go back to sleep, so I might as well make good use of these sleepless hours.

Halloween 2019 was warm, trick or treating in short sleeves and sandals, and windy. LG does it right, and this year was no different. And I think we had less people this year because of the weather, which is a little added bonus.

We hosted a potluck dinner, so I did the requisite all day cleaning that goes into hosting. Happily, Matt hung my beautiful doily and another project that’s been sitting around for awhile, and everything looks so good all put away. 🤗

I had made pulled pork a few weeks ago and it was so easy and delish, I thought I’d do it again. In true Shell fashion though, this one wasn’t as good. It’s one of my fun quirks, you never know if what I cook will be delish, or disgusting. It’s like roulette, it’s great.

Today was also book character day at school. I am working hard at saying ‘yes!’ to as many things as possible, so in that vein, Halloween and Red Ribbon week have been exercises in patience and giving kids choices. Frankie decided to remain Mal, and Delaney decided to revisit last years Queen of Hearts. Not one to break with tradition, we were 15 minutes late for school. Because that’s what you do on spirit days, duh.

Crazy hair spray hair when she got home. Before I ruffled it, it stayed up all by itself.

We had 38 friends for dinner. Thankfully our weird Halloween weather allowed for outdoor dining. Right before T or T’ing is always a madhouse, and this year was more of the same. T or T’ers started coming in earnest, our kids were itching to leave, and I was the only adult outside trying to manage. I did the best I could and released the animals.

Silly shot!

These 11-year-olds were thrilled to be on their own again this year. They carried walkie talkies and had loads of adventures tricking people and getting the middle school/high school low-down.

Frankie went off with Morgan and her mom. Halfway through, they grabbed the golf cart and finished trick or treating in style. Lucky girl!

Matt stayed home to man the fort, and I got to take the 7-year-old crew around. We occasionally walked with friends, but often found ourselves in just our trio.

We met up with other friends from school and they were cute and fun for a few houses.

I told them we could stay out as long as they wanted. That ended up being till just passed 8, which was perfect.

As soon as we walked up our driveway I realized how tired I was. I grabbed our almost empty cauldron of candy and told Matt we were going in. He was like “let’s get rid of the rest...” and I was like “nope, let’s get girls too bed, too tired.” And he was like “ok!”

We let the girls sort candy as we  tidied post party. Delaney requested a shot curled around her candy.

Candy sorting is a joy of childhood.

Frankie’s pile remained unsorted because she had hair dye and had to take a shower.

It was a good Halloween with these big, growing girls. Sometime in the next 5 years they’ll probably all want to go alone, or be done, and then I’ll pass out candy for the first time in 23+ years. We are in a fun stage of life and I’m excited.

Oh, and we can’t forget the cutest baby shark we ever did see!

After the dress up fun, he decided Halloween was too spooky. He’s just the sweetest and we all can’t wait for their family to come visit next month!

Monday

7:17am. First trip to the middle school because we missed the bus. Monday was a doosey. I had trouble sleeping and when my alarm went off I thought I snoozed it but instead had turned it off. So then the 6:43 bus alarm woke me up. And pushed back every other thing for the rest of the day.

5:46pm. The day was so whack and behind, I didn’t even document anything else until piano time. Homework in the car with the bug.

6:12pm. Frankie at bat.

7:53pm. Fun with Halloween costumes.

7:55pm. A spooky menu, courtesy of D. I’m interested in the toxick water with snake flak’s myself. 😂

And thus ends my first week in the life. Next time I’ll research and maybe take a different tactic, but this was fun to try to think of documenting things I don’t normally document, but might like to remember in a few years. And now back to my regularly scheduled sporadic blogging.

Sunday

7:32an - headed to Ward Council.

8:23am. Matt sent me this pic of a very sleepy bug eating her Sunday pop tart. They are only allowed them one day a week, and since Matt has been flying solo Sunday mornings for going on 4 years, Sunday has become the pop tart day.

11:41am. Leaving church together. 🤗

12:43pm. The sacred Sunday napping hour.

3:46pm. Supervising girls piano practice. Sometimes they love it, sometimes they hate it. Addie is practicing a difficult piece for the Primary Program at church in a few weeks, so she’s currently hating it.

3:49pm. When Sunday’s are a day of rest.

4:27pm. Some kind of delicious Indian dish I made in my fancy pot.

4:39pm. The littlest witch. Addie brought the Halloween bins out on her own and started decorating. I could get used to that!

5:44pm. Post dinner walk to show off my new running spot.

5:51pm. The girls love, love, love the hills and have been back several times. It’s funny how much joy our little dirt road has brought to us. New paths to explore!

5:54pm. Love.

6:23pm. Dessert with Schoeny’s and Callihan’s. Also cup stacking fun.

7:26pm. While David, Tracie, and I talked shop, Joni kept the kids occupied with games.

8:10pm. Scripture power hour in mom and dads bed.

Saturday

7:17am. Good Saturday morning.

7:38am. I’ve been wanting to try this fancy yogurt forever and bought some on sale and with a coupon the other day. 🤗 it did not disappoint.

7:55am. Always the first one up.

12:01pm. Adventure day! We moved slow, but finally got all packed up.

12:11pm. Lexi reports it is coming down in Montana. 😬

12:42pm. Matt expounds.

12:43pm. The girls spread out in the truck.

2:12pm. A potty stop that turned into a milkshake stop that ended in a spilled milkshake and a request for a replacement, which request was happily granted. Daddy cleaned the shake mess while Addie and I requested a new shake.

12:54pm. Beautiful country and almost to stop #1.

3:16pm. We made it to the White Hall Sunflower fields.

3:20pm. One of the 50 most beautiful places in Maryland.

3:25pm. I’ve wanted to come out here for years, but have either forgotten or not been able to make it during the sunflowers bloom.

3:42pm. More sunflowers. It was really beautiful.

3:48pm. We love a portrait shot.

4:02pm. Another most beautiful place, and very close to the sunflowers, the Ladew Topiary Gardens. Unfortunately they close at 5 and are also almost $20 per person, so we settled for a drive through the parking lot.

4:03pm. We saw a few cool topiarys, but this odd one is the only one I remembered to s so.

4:57pm. And finally, our last stop of the day, another beautiful place - Kilgore Falls

5:00pm. The water was aups cold, but these kids love them a waterfall.

5:33pm. Happy.

5:34pm. Matt worked to improve the dam

6:11pm. Before we left we hiked to the top and edge of the waterfall.

6:18pm. I was nervous, but we all made it.

We drove home via a quick stop for happy meals and it was a wonderful day of adventuring. And I only have 10 more beautiful places to see!
