elm tree, ny - lighthouse #5

this guy was a range light with the new drop lighthouse, just about a mile and a half up the hill. just to give an idea of how close our lights were. we didn't have any time to regroup!
this sad little thing is just a concrete tower standing where a cute lighthouse used to stand. in the '60's the beacon was moved to this concrete tower where it continued flashing until the early '70's. now it's just sad.

there are ball fields around there, but it's not super nice.
there was a group out cleaning, or digging, or something.
after this, they guilted me into going and touching the tower. there's just something about having touched a lighthouse, it's important.
it was a weedy, thorny walk, but i did it.
looking back inland you can see the staten island range, i believe.
and we're off for more fun!
