blackwell island, ny - lighthouse #12

our last light of our crazy friday was this little cutie. we finally found a metro, finally got tickets, and finally walked to the end of the island to the lighthouse.

the sun was starting to go down and the views were just spectacular. which was good because it was a long walk, and starting to get chilly. if it wasn't beautiful i just don't know what might have happened. ;)
this is one of the most unique lights we've visited because it was originally used to light an insane asylum on this cute little roosevelt island, just across the east river from manhattan. the island has a fascinating history too. (this was one of the ones i researched) the island has also held a prison and was once nicknamed "welfare island" after project homes were built there. now there is a huge hospital and some homes there. and of course, this little cutie.
those are some tired, hungry, but still happy lighthousers.
i was so excited to see the green door i had seen in the pictures, but no, she just had a plain old black door when we saw her.
here's what we had to say about blackwell island light:

m - so cute, missed the green door
l - so peaceful, quiet, separated from the city
s - beautiful sunset for pictures
that island and lighthouse were very cute, but that island was very difficult to get off of! we had decided  to stick to our original plan to attend a session in the manhattan temple. we decided to call a cab since we didn't have a lot of wiggle room, so we walked to the hospital and did our best to find a cab that would service the island, and waited for them at the hospital. we changed into our church clothes and waited. and waited. and waited. they kept saying they were almost there, but then nothing. we finally decided, after wasting at least half an hour waiting, to take a bus. we debated and researched and tried to figure out the best way to go, and still ended up going waaaay out of the way. like, we were in queens, or somewhere not even close to the temple. it was super frustrating! but still so pretty!
we finally made it to the temple, but we'd missed the last endowment session, so we did initiatories instead. it was still an amazing experience and another place i cannot wait to go back to! we laughed when we saw this bus and just had to get a pic of our mysterious laura. ;)
we were so tired, we probably left the temple around 10, and had been at it non-stop, with nary a real meal to be had, since 5am. and we had all been up late the night before prepping and researching our lights, so we weren't doing too hot. we got some street food and headed to our hotel, which was probably about 45 minutes away. looooong and productive day!
