mother's day trip - roanoke river lighthouse replica, plymouth #11 - and a decision

 so.
after our fast paced weekend, and especially our super hurried sunday, we ate a leisurely and very slow dinner. we still had 2 more lighthouses we wanted to see and 5 1/2 more hours till home... and it was 9pm. during some of the time that jc wasn't completely rushing us, he was telling us about the hotel he also worked at and that he could get us a good room rate. that planted a seed that grew and blossomed in our minds. i was the only holdout to staying an extra day. i just didn't think it was possible. so after we left the restaurant, i was texting matt and he asked where we were. i told him that he wasn't going to believe it, but we hadn't left roanoke island yet. his response "get a room!" and it was done! we made all the calls and arrangements - and there were a lot. matt decided he would just use a personal day and stay home with the girls. jeff couldn't miss work, but matt offered to keep ashby because our little girls love playing with her and she's super easy to watch. it ended up that asa stayed home with her and jeff came home early. then laura's david said he would be able to stay home and help with shelly's kids because shelly's dave had a meeting he couldn't miss. we had it all scheduled out, but in the end dave ended up staying home and calling in to his meeting. all arrangements made and it was full speed ahead to plymouth! as we got close, darlaina found us a holiday inn, which with our military discount came out to $22 each. add a hot breakfast to that and we got a pretty good deal!

the next morning we headed over to the lighthouse. we thought it was closed, so we had no other expectation than to take pictures with it.

 and pictures we did take.

 lighthouse selfies never grow old.

 never.

so, the above picture is the finished product. you've got the full lighthouse, and all 4 faces, not weird, in the picture. but here are the makings of that perfection. ;) fail #1 - lighthouse cut out.

fail #2 - lighthouse cut out and weird faces.

fail #3 - cupola and faces cut out

fail #4 - more of the some.

 lighthouse selfie's can be exhausting!
shelly got a little adventurous and walked out on the dock to take a pic of us, prim and proper on the bench.
see?
 adventure myers, over there.
but then i started feeling rebellious and threw caution to the wind. a chain can't keep this lighthouser down.

my bad influence rubbed off and soon we were all ducking under the chain for a better look around.
we joked about the headlines "4 maryland women, mothers of 17 children, were arrested for trespassing early monday morning..."
 you know those crazy lighthousers!
as we were leaving, we were looking at the cute little main street, and i don't know what prompted us to walk down and look, (the ghosts of lighthouse keepers of yore?) but we did and found a little museum that said it was open on monday, but not until 11. it was only 10, but we looked in and an older woman who was drinking her mcd's coffee and reading the newspaper came and unlocked the door for us! we were so surprised, but i asked her if she happened to have a key to the lighthouse and she said... yes!!! and she let us in, even though they weren't open yet! take that, jc!!!

we got to check out the whole lighthouse and go up to the cupola...
... where shelly and darlaina got supah silly! aren't we crazy?! ;)
 love it!

and love this cute lighthouse all full of character.
the only downside was that sweet ethel, the museum lady, was a biiiiig talker. she was full of great information but we were kind of still in a hurry to get home and we still had one more lighthouse on our list! we heard all about that dangerous roanoke river behind us there. very interesting stuff.
the cute main street.

we finally escaped ethel's stories and headed north to edenton for lh #12!
