mother's day trip - bodie island lighthoust #8

after we decided to add in the currituck lighthouse, we were in a major hurry. i was the driver and i was super stressed trying to get from the hatteras lighthouse to the bodie island lighthouse, 55 minutes away according to mapquest, in only 35 minutes. we still made time to stop and snap a quick pic of these super cute rentals. arent' they adorbs?
laura and i, along with our families, visited the bodie lighthouse last june, but we weren't able to climb it because they were making repairs and it was covered in scaffolding. they just re-opened it and made it available for climbing for the first time ever this past april.
they did such a good job! she's beautiful!
they are doing something different with this lighthouse by only allowing climbers to take a 45 minute tour with a national parks guide. that is the only way you can climb.
since we wanted to get up to corolla to climb the currituck lighthouse before they closed at 5, we had to make the 2:50 tour and we didn't have much time!
anywho, i put the pedal to the medal and we made it! it was super stressful. big mama don't speed no mo'! so to be speeding, and passing vehicles (safely, of course), it was really stressful! i know, i'm such a wuss!

so excited to actually be able to climb this time!

someone, somewhere in history spelled the name "body" wrong, so now the lighthouse is spelled "bodie," but still pronounced "body." history is so interesting to me! i would love to know how that mistake was made and by whom.
 our cute tour guide. :)
we all decided that we liked the whole tour aspect of climbing. it was a little bit frustrating and challenging to try to fit it into our schedule, but she did a good job on the tour and made us all cry. twice.

she had us close our eyes and imagine it was the early 1900's and we were sailing through a storm into the graveyard of the atlantic, we didn't know where we were, or if we would make it, when out of the storm we are able to make out the signature flash of the bodie island ligthhouse, allowing us to safely navigate the sandy shoals. and then how thankful we would be that someone we would probably never meet saved our lives by keeping the light going all night. it sounds cheesy, but it was really touching.
and then right before we got to the top, she read a quote by a lighthouse keeper. i can't remember what she said, (these kids are sucking my very brain out of my head) but i remember that it was very poignant and was teary time #2.

view looking up. it's so nice and new and beautiful inside!

 and view looking down.

darlaina has such an eye for pretty and classic. she just fell in love with these windows, and then after she ranted and raved about them, i did too. i could totally sit in this nook and read a book. heaven!

cute keepers quarters. it was separated into a duplex for the keeper and assistant's families.

 top o'the world!

it's a bright view from the top.
and plus also (i still love you, sarah palin!) very windy up there.

as we climbed our last few lighthouses, shelly started taking these shots where she'd kinda hang her camera all the way over the side. i couldn't handle taking them, but the pictures came out really cool!
we hiked out to the end of this dock last year with all of our crew. there's all sorts of wildlife - turtles and crabs and all sorts of marshy things, that make the rule of staying on the dock an important rule.
we took a few minutes after our tour to instruct a national parks employee in taking our picture including the  whole lighthouse in the picture. public service for other lighthousers, yo.
souvie's - including magnets and a cute bodie island lighthouse charm and we were off!
