so.
after all of our nc lighthouses - we visited 12 out of 14 nc lights. lighthouses 13 and 14 are out in the water and we will someday go to them. for now, our north carolina lighthouses are done. but, as laura was driving, just for grins and giggles i went to our fav lighthouse website - lighthouse friends - and checked to see if any of the virginia lighthouses were on our way. or, kind of on our way. ;)
turns out new cape henry and old cape henry were pretty much on our way!
and we were off!
we figured it would be easier to ask our families forgiveness rather than permission and flew by the seats of our pants. ;)
these lights are on fort monroe, which is a navy base, but since the lighthouses were there first, they are made available to the public. not that it would matter, since we, ahem, have access to the military.
this is the first lighthouse i've been to that had so many steps outside of it.
the nice gift shop girls said that george washington had walked the very same steps that we were walking. sa-weet!
haha! where's michelle?
this is the old cape henry lighthouse. they didn't think it was structurally sound and it wasn't high enough, so they built the new cape henry lh, but this old girl is still going strong. it made us really love her!
and there are some cool facts about it!
look at all that character. i just loooove ligthhousing!
from the top of och you have a great view of nch - which isn't open for climbing because it's still operated by the coast guard.
this is where darlaina and i finished up our souvie shopping with some shirts for our hub's.
so glad that we stopped!
