as we were leaving the bodie island i called the currituck lighthouse to see exactly how early we needed to get there to ensure we could climb. i talked to jc, who wanted to know where we were before he would give me any information. knowing that mapquest said it was an hour and 20 minute trip, but not wanting to tell him that (it was 3:45), i said "oh, we're about an hour away..." but he was relentless and asked again where we were. i couldn't tell him we were still at the bodie island lighthouse because i figured he'd shut us down for sure. so i fibbed and said we'd left the lighthouse about 20 minutes ago. he was like "ok... i'll let you climb if you can make it here by 4:45. ask for jc." my nerves were still shot from peddling it like a maniac to get to bodie on time, so laura drove. and girlfriend can drive! we made it right at 4:40! she shaved 25 minutes off mapquests time!
which was a good thing because jc was not messing around. he met us at the gate and was like, "okay ladies, you can climb up quickly and then back down quickly. and i'll be right behind you. we gotta go."
of course we wanted to oooh and ahhhh and take pictures but jc kept pushing us. he was really kind of funny with how very, very blunt he was.
as we started climbing (despite jc's rushing) we started noticing how very similar this was to the bodie lighthouse. when we climbed the second to last section that was held by 2 strong wires from the ceiling, and shook a little if too many people climbed at once, we realized they are the same blueprint. pretty cool!
corolla is one of the northern-most towns on the outer banks and it is very green and lush and forresty. corolla is home to some wild horses too.
more of darlaina's great eye for photography.
there's nothing like the view from the top of a lighthouse!
at the top were two very nice ladies that we asked to take a picture of us. we were chatting it up and shelly said something about our husband and 17 children we had left behind. then she corrected herself and said "huband'S! 4 of them!" the lady smiled and said "oh, i'm not here to judge." it was very funny and we all laughed and laughed, until jc caught up with us and shut us down. "let's go ladies!"
shelly at it again.
the fresnel (pronounced freh-nel, it's french) lens.
jc finally got us out of the lighthouse, only for us to further frustrate his progress by taking pictures out front. keep in mind that we climbed up and back down all before the official closing time of 5:00pm. jc was a little ridiculous.
but he did take a pretty nice picture of us and bonus points for managing to get the whole lighthouse in.
she's another purty one!
our obx lighthouses. boo for only climbing three, but we've been to them all, hooray!
