bald head island has been the home of 3 lighthouses, old baldy, cape fear, and another one that was never named (as far as i can tell). the first lighthouse was built too close to the river's edge so it was torn down in 1813. because old baldy was not in a good place and not tall enough to help ships sailing the dangerous frying pan shoals, cape fear lighthouse was built in 1903.
after the oak island lighthouse was built though, cape fear light tower was demolished in 1958 because it was never very functional.
demolished lighthouses are sad, sad. but at least we got to see where it used to be.
lighthouse #3 (remains count!) - done!
