the one with the school supply shopping

lexi was sick today (stomach bug) and has been watching a lot of friends. love that show! because she was sick, she missed her cheer tryout tonight. she had been texting coach beth all day, so beth talked to the athletic director and he said to just make a decision based off of her performance at the tryouts so far. so guess who made the varsity cheer squad without even trying out??? go lexi, go! i just love fall, and going to all the football games and watching my beautiful girl cheering! i am already sad that this will be my last year! we'll still have to go to some of the home games. we are the raider nation, after all!

grandpa and matt headed out to alexandria to hit up rei this morning. they had a fun boys day but didn't do lunch. what? i told granpda that when i take people out for the day, we always do lunch! they got home and matt went to the streeters to download a program he needs for his classes. why, oh why is our internet so slow? matt is taking two online classes this quarter and it's gonna be a lot of work! cannot wait to be done! or, you know, for him to be done.

the lifeguard lifeguarded. except that it was like 75° again today and they only had a few people at the pool, and only for about 5 hours. that leaves 5 hours to do nothing. lifeguard alex has a little bed set up in the break room and lifeguard chris worked on some summer reading assignments. it's been really neat for christian to get to know people from other countries. alex and all the lifeguard bosses (igor) are from russia and there are some from china as well. on the very, very slow days like they've had lately, they have had a lot of time to sit and talk. chris told me all about the russian economy, schools, the state of their roads, and what a dream it would be for alex to permanently move here. we had a good discussion about how blessed we are to live in this wonderful country. we've got our problems, but we really are sooooo very blessed.

i entertained little girls, fed little girls, and put little girls down for naps and then my big little girl and i went shopping. first stop: staples! sales on school supplies and then off to target! more school supplies! then off to walmart! more school supplies! i could have gotten them all at one place, but i like to get the best deal and i needed other things from target and wally anyway.
addie is very big on game plans. i usually tell the kids the plan as we drive, and then they ask all day, "okay, where are we going next?" i'd tell her each store and she'd say "oh, i hate that store." and then as we'd pull into the parking lot she'd say "oh! i like this store! i thought you meant a different one." still not sure which store she hates, because she ended up liking all the ones we went to today. we also hit the commissary and the exchange. long day!
we had a good time and i think we've got all her school supplies ready. for the big kids we've got tons of loose paper, folders, and pens and pencils. what else do they need? we shall see.
i found out that addie's k teacher is a new teacher named miss huber. i am so excited she's getting a first year k teacher! not so many years ago that was me!!! and i remember one of my students moms telling me how excited she was to have a brand new teacher for her son, and how happy that made me feel as a beginning teacher. and now i'm that mom! i just love this time of year! autumn is coming, school is starting, supplies are new, and i am happy.

also, before i forget. one day we were driving and addie said "let's play hide-and-go-seek, frankie! i'll go first!" so then as frankie counted, addie "hid" in her carseat by squeezing herself as small as she could. in her carseat. frankie dutifully counted and then said "there you are! my turn!" and then as addie counted, frankie leaned back in her seat as far as she could. as soon as addie was done counting she said "there you are!" and so it went. i swear, i just love these little weirdo's! i couldn't make this stuff up! hide-and-go-seek while strapped in car seats?! and they've played several times since then! love it!
