Day #196-#198

We decided to take full advantage of having auntie Alli living with us and get away, just Matt and I. We can’t go far, didn’t have a lot of time, and wanted to be safe, so our options were limited, but we also have super low fun during covid standards, so easy easy. We went to Sunday School, had our at hone sacrament, ate lunch, and then headed out to Salisbury. We usually like to listen to a podcast or read something and then talk about it, but this time we just talked the whole way. It was SO nice. We got to our hotel, ate our peanut butter and jelly sandwich dinner, and then walked around the college for hours. We’ve known so many people that went to Salisbury, so it was cool to finally see it and it was a really pretty campus. We walked around some of the neighborhoods and talked about all the things.

We had our Stake Relief Society Zoom Conference at 7, so we sat on our bed and ate popcorn and enjoyed listening to all the speakers. It was a perfect, quiet, socially distanced and safe first day.

On our drive on Sunday we passed a Denny’s and Matt said he wanted to eat at a Denny’s while we were away, which seemed super random, but I can always dig a Farmers Slam. We found out that our hotel wasn’t serving breakfast because of covid, but guess what was right next door? Denny’s! We enjoyed Matt’s dream breakfast and then headed to the beach. My heart was so happy. I don’t remember the last time we went to an east  coast beach. Surely not for the last two summers when we were out west, and we never made it this summer. It was 75 degrees and the water was 70, so it wasn’t particularly warm, but we were on a mission. We found a sandbar and played in the waves as long as we could, until our hands and feet started to go numb, almost 2 hours. It was so amazing. Having started our marriage with an 8 and 10 year old, we’d never been to the beach by ourselves and it did not disappoint. And also, our girls are all big enough to play out in the waves with us and we for sure need to get back to a swimming beach soon!

It was a yellow flag windy day and on our way in, we got caught in a riptide. We each panicked for a hot second. We’d been able to touch the not slimy sandy bottom pretty much the whole time, until the rip current, and then all of a sudden we couldn’t. We swam together against the shoreline and it took us a few minutes, but we made it back safe and sound. Matt played in the sand, including dumping a handful on his head. I’d still be working sand out if I’d done that, but he was fine.

We collected shells and enjoyed the waves and took a nap until we got hungry, then we changed and drove to the Ocean City boardwalk.

We’ve both been here separately, but not together. Masks were required on the boardwalk and it was not busy, so it was pretty perfect. We found a pizza place with outdoor seating and enjoyed a delicious lunch with a gorgeous view, complete with an original cannoli for dessert.

We walked all along the boardwalk and then out on this long pier. We had to pay $.50 each (๐Ÿ™„) to walk out here, but it was a cool view.

We sadly left the beach behind and headed to Easton next. We stayed the night in a Quality Inn that was fine, not too fancy, but clean, but that we’re pretty sure they also used to house homeless people. Which I’m all for, but was surprising. We had a leisurely night and breakfast in our room and headed north to cross off some 50 most beautiful places. We drove around Chestertown and tried to find a way to walk around Washington college there, but all the entrances were closed and it was pretty apparent they didn’t want random people walking around, which is understandable. It is the cutest little liberal town, chock full of Biden/Harris signs. we parked downtown and walked around.

We parked right by this store. ๐Ÿ’•

Matt wanted to fly his drone by the water, but we got down there and found it was too windy.

It wasn’t bright enough for shades, but still bright!

Next up, we headed to Chesapeake City, another of my 50 places, in search of lunch. Addie texted us from the iPad. She’s so silly and fun.

๐Ÿ˜‚

We found a cozy little restaurant right on the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal. We sat on the sloped lawn and watched the ships go by.

We shared cream of crab soup and the most delicious sweet potato fries I’ve ever tasted and dreamed of buying a big boat and sailing around the world.

CS was adorable; tons of B&B’s and cute gallery shops. Most were closed, but we window shopped and enjoyed the beautiful day. It was supposed to rain all day, but stayed overcast and cool, really just a perfect day.

We stopped at Rosaryville State Park on our way home and I found this visitor in the bathroom. I’m so glad it was right at the entrance and didn’t slither over while i was doing my business. It was small, but still. My brave husband got a stick and shooed it out for me.

I have to say I didn’t love the park. There was something about it that was creepy. It wasn’t kept up well and there were several men out and about by themselves, which usually weirds me out. We hiked out to check out the Mt. Airy Mansion and again Matt tried to fly his drone, and again was thwarted. This time because we were so close to Andrews that it was restricted airspace. The mansion was creepy too and we heard weird noises like someone else was there. I enjoyed walking with Matt, but would not recommend Rosaryville.

We stopped at Rita’s for one last treat. I was convinced it was closed for the season, but Matt was a believer, and he was right. We brought the crew back some ice cream sandwiches and got to hear all about the fun they had while we were away.

Papa picked them up and took them to McDonald’s and the park. Lucky ladies!

They all said they had a great few days and even got some schoolwork done.

Some trips are amazing and some are just so-so, but I’m grateful that this one was amazing. It was good for our marriage and good for me personally. So grateful we got to explore together.
