We pulled our laundry off our 5th story line this morning and a lot of it was still a little wet.
This apartment is so cute!
Ariana decorated it very girly and it smells good too. Swoon.
And one of these days I’ll remember pictures before we live in it.
Adorbs little kitchen!
She left us some chips, water, and spritz - which is alcoholic don’t ask how I know.
It has the tiniest semi-creepy elevator. We loaded the girls up with all our luggage and sent them on down.
Goodbye cute Tommy House! It was on Vis Niccolò Tommaseo 👉🏻 Tommy House.
We went to the grocery store for brekkie stuff and matt went to the laundromat to dry our stuff and then we were off to the Mona Lisa Bridge.
We drove onto private property where the river was almost completely covered by brush and it felt very much like lighthouse hunting.
The girls gave me their best Mona Lisa.
Pretty good, right?
I do think a Danger sign is always promising when hunting sights on private property.
We regrouped and drove to the other side of the river and found pictures and signs to guide our way.
And there it is! What’s left of it at least.
Who knows if this is really the inspiration or if Leonardo was ever here or saw a pic of this place on Arrezo, but it was kind of fun to hike through cobwebs and get a bunch of mosquito bites looking for it.
And one more Mona Lisa for good measure.
We came upon an interesting looking town and pulled over to stretch our legs. We would have eaten here, but like so many others, this was a ghost town.
We found this beautiful tribute to local WW2 survivors. This little town Civitella in Val di Chiana was massacred in 1944 after two German soldiers had been killed in a bar. The German soldiers came at dawn, more than a week after the attack, so the locals thought they were safe, and killed 244 men, women, and children - dragging them from their homes and shooting them in groups of 5.
Some of these survivors even wore their concentration camp stripes. I always like the smiling ladies. Life can be so incredibly hard and ugly and sad but it’s also beautiful and miraculous and happy. I hope I will be a smiling old lady.
This castle was built in 1048! It was damaged during the war and has been left that way.
I can’t even wrap my head around how old these places are. Matt always says how he’d love to pick a spot and watch the same location from the beginning of time to now, to see the people and the changes. It would be fascinating, and also boring too. Like life.
The girls were tired. Honestly, we’ve been traveling for 2 1/2 weeks and it’s *so hot.* and everyone is still having fun and also slowing on down. So we left the girls in a shaded park and kept exploring.
So many villages in the hills. So many. So sleepy.
We stayed that night on the southern short of Lake Bolsena. We walked down to the lake beach and had a lovely pasta and gelato dinner and dessert and then hit the lake.
Well, first we had to walk back to the Casa Lago e Camino, but then we hit the lake.
Delaney’s been doing this weird stance lately, so I asked her to fix it.
Better
The lake is the largest volcanic lake in Europe and in some spots is 150 meters deep (1/2 the Eiffel Tower!) but even though we swam out to the buoys, we only found it to be around 10’ deep.
Matt was snorkeling his heart out.
I ❤️ golden hour.
This little house is pretty quirky! The girls said it looks like several houses mishmashed together because this leather sofa/black lacquer family room is in sharp contrast to the grandma bedroom Delaney and adi slept in. It was fine’ish.
Matt and I left the girls to shower and went for a walk. We invited them, but see earlier that our precious angel babies are tired.
I bought a conditioner I’ve seen European curly girls talk about and we all deep conditioned our hair before our showers and then Matt and I went for our walk and you can totally tell something is not right with our hair. 🤣
Anyways, this is the cutest little town and we loved watching the sun set on the water and hearing the band play and enjoying the cooler temperatures. It was as cool as it’s been here ever since we froze in Paris.
Loooove this clock tower!
And this is the view from the top floor. You can see the lake on both sides, and the up upstairs was the only part with a nicely working air conditioner. We would have slept up there but no beds.
We left windows open and kept a floor fan on us and managed to get a good night of sleep.
