We were about a mile away from our church house so we started off walking, but something we learned about Kaua’i, because lots of people told us, and by experience, is that it’s one of the rainiest places on earth. And it was also v windy, so we got a few minutes down the beach path and called it a day and went to our car.
Quick bathroom break and their beautiful church courtyard.
I wish I’d have gotten a picture of their chapel because it was so beautiful. It was separate from the other buildings and the whole chapel had several French doors on every side. It was so cool. During Sunday school we made a very eccentric friend Colleen and exchanged phone numbers and info with her, but more about her later.
After church we changed clothes and hit the Kīlauea Lighthouse. Sadly, it’s closed for visits.
And, surprise surprise, it was raining again!
She’s a cute lil’ lady!
We tried something new and rented an electric car, and for our purposes that was a two thumbs down experience. First, our little hotel didn’t have a charging spot. So we searched for a charging spot and drove north and figured we’d get lunch and charge up. After a few minutes we found our adapter and got everything plugged in. We shared a pork and cabbage lunch and when we got back to our car it had charged like 5%. 😩
On to our hike. We did the Okoleho Trail hike, which was a “strenuous” hike. And I can vouch for that rating.
It rained on us most of the way up and back and was suuuuper muddy.
Pretty steep uphills and lots of slipping and sliding.
1250 elevation. This was our view from the top - no view. Too cloudy and wet. We were basically drenched from a combo of sweat and rain.
This halfway point lookout was the best we could see. Somewhere along the way I found a walking stick and that helped. Matt held my hand the whole way, and though we both slipped many times, we didn’t fall. We did however get v muddy. Matt washed our shoes in the bathtub as soon as we got home.
We found that the land of Hanalei from Puff the Magic Dragon fame was just down the road, so we checked out their beach. The town looked adorable, but also busy and we try not to shop on Sunday.
We googled superchargers for our car, and on one of our searches, found a “supercharger” right by where the lighthouse was. Even though we’d searched that before and didn’t see it, we got different results almost every time. So we tried their charging port, walked around, looked for a dinner spot with no luck, and when we got back an hour later we’d only charged another 5%. 😩😩
Plan C, we found another “supercharger,” this time an actual Tesla one down in Popui, which our new friend Colleen said we should definitely check out. By this point we’d eaten 2 muffins and shared a lunch dish and it was 5:00. I don’t normally get hangry, but the combo of car charging frustration and hunger got me. Matt was so sweet, he was like - what do you want? Anything! We were passing by Wailua Shave Ice on our way to Popui, so he offered to stop there and it was delicious and just what I needed to tide me over. And then everything was right in my world again.
Anyways, we made it to Popui, but the supercharger advertised was actually at the Hyatt Regency Resort. We were able to pay to park, (which ended up being $30 for 2 hours😩) and headed for a mile long walk to Popui beach. Charging attempt #3. 👇🏻

Colleen said we had to get a Puka Dog and see the giant turtles at Popui Beach, so that’s what we did. I got a mild Polish Sausage with mango relish and Hawaiian mustard and it was so good! Perfect recommendation, Colleen!

We made it down to the beach right before it got dark and there were tons of huge turtles!

Another core memory unblocked. How lucky to have this experience and so many of those on one two week trip!

About 10 minutes later, that storm cell that was hanging out over the ocean hit the beach with a vengeance. It was pouring and windy and we just made it to this shelter before getting soaked.

We hung out there for about 20 minutes and walked the beach way back to the Hyatt and after 2 hours found our car… you guessed it, another 5% charged.

We had one more hope, that our hotel might let us plug in with an extension cord overnight (Matt watched a video), but when we got back and asked them, they said no can do. At that point we gave up. We were supposed to return the car to at least 70%, and we really tried to charge the car, but we weren’t really set up for success. We still had a great day, and we packed a little and got to bed by 10:00 for our last night in Kaua’i.
