we could see the twins as we drove to sandy hook! first twin lights ever and we were sooo excited!
i spy two crazy friends!
jus' chillin'.
my attempt at a panorama.
amateur.
i.love.this.light.
this lighthouse is set on the one of the highest points on the eastern seaboard and (don't quote me on this) makes this light one of the tallest from sea level (because the bluff is so high).
l - i just wanted to stay there! 250ft above sea level, highest light on east coast
(i told her that, so don't quote her either;)
m - loved being up on the hill
s - the 'mystery cannon,' giant fresnel lens, could see romer shoal and barely west bank, cool fortress/castle. i want to bring my kids back here!
this 7-ton bi-valve lens was made by the french for the worlds colombian exposition in 1893, to commemorate the 400th anniversary of columbus sailing to the new world. they somehow sold this to the us lighthouse service, who placed it at the navesink lights. but neighbors complained that once the bulb was lit they couldn't sleep and their chickens wouldn't lay eggs, so it didn't last long. that sucker is big!
this is another well built fortress!
such fun to be able to climb two towers in one place!
pointing out lighthouses. only i can't remember which ones. maybe sandy hook? it's only 4 miles away.
one tower the top was outside and the other was enclosed.
spiral staircases make me happy. even when i forget to crop my feet.
this was the cool road we took out to sandy hook.
and the spit of land that leads to sandy hook.
and for good measure, how about some selfies. tower 1.
and tower 2.
there, that'll do it. :)
