Philadelphia - Part 1

Our ward temple day was Saturday. The youth baptisms we’re at 8:30 and we had planned to do a ward endowment session at 11:30. So our family planned to leave at 6:00 since we didn’t need to be there for the baptisms. We ended up leaving at 6:15, so not too bad. These little girls don’t usually sleep when they get up early for traveling

Addie and Frankie were up for the day.

This little piggy stayed asleep for a long time though. And then on the way home, the roles were reversed and A and F fell asleep pretty quickly and D was the last gal standing.

Delaney is convinces she’ll live in Delaware when she grows up. I mean, they share the first 4 letters. And also it was blustery and rainy.

Our first stop in Philadelphia was Reading Terminal Market. This gang had never been there, and they loved it as much as I do! We got donuts, a smoothie, and some stuffed grape leaves. V random are we.

The G-waters so generously watched kids (with the youths help) across the street at the church again. Things at the temple didn’t go according to my plan, but that actually ended up being the best plan, which so often happens and someday I’ll learn.

We love this temple and we love Philadelphia, we just wish it wasn’t so very far away.

I love this guy. We had a great drive up, a wonderful few hours in the temple, a fun time enjoying Philadelphia. After a scary and stressful situation at home, it was just the right kind of Saturday.

Of outlets and blessings

I always get weirdly nervous turning the heat on for the first time each fall. With Matt gone last week, I just wasn’t ready to turn the house heat on. Plus also propane is stupid expensive.

Anyways, we had our two trusty space heaters running their hearts out Thursday morning before school when we started to smell a gross plastic burning kind of smell. I immediately thought it was the heaters and unplugged the older of the 2. The smell persisted, but we left for school and I didn’t think anything else of it. I worked upstairs finishing the dreaded mom job of switching seasonal clothes and had no problem smells. We had horseback and then I picked Maggie up to watch the girls as I had Auxiliary training at the Stake Center that night..

Chris relieved Maggie when he got off work at 7:15 and Aux training was wonderful. As I drove home, about 15 minutes away, Chris called and said that he’d discovered the source of the smell and he’d sent a picture of one of our outlets that was smoking. I still wasn’t too worried, Matt had told him to call the fire department, and i agreed, but said maybe call the non emergency line. After we hung up I looked at the picture and immediately texted back to call 911 and find a fire extinguisher. My heart was racing and my prayers were coming fast and furious.

I pulled onto LG Parkeay as the sirens went off. The first of three fire trucks showed up about 5 minutes later. Chris was bringing the 3 very sleepy girls outside as the firemen had directed him to. It was 10:30 and i didn’t want to bother any neighbors, and my car was still warm, so I brought the girls into the Camry parked across the street from the house.

The guys came in and checked that the fuse was off (Chris had turned it off), unscrewed the outlet, and used their thermal imaging device on the wall. It was warm up to about 6 feet up the wall. 😬

Several neighbors came to check in on us, including Louise, who insisted the girls come over and fed them graham crackers and milk until it was safe to come back home.

The outlet plug is completely melted and the terrible smell has lingered. It even started eroding the drywall. I’m no fire expert, but given the heat of the wall, condition of the plug and wires, smoke, and the live ember that was in the outlet, I think we’d have had a fire within an hour.

I am so in awe of Heavenly Father’s hand in our lives. There were so many tender mercies. So many what if’s. What if I’d decided not to hassle with the babysitter shuffle and just not go to the training? What if I had gotten home 30 minutes earlier? What if Matt had been home, and somehow didn’t find the smell? What if Chris didn’t care? And the list goes on. The outlet is directly below Delaney’s room, it could have been so, so bad. I am so very grateful for a loving Heavenly Father and His constant care and protection. What an amazing, faith affirming experience.

Chris stayed the night with us to make sure us helpless gals were all safe. I realize I come off looking like a brainless damsel in distress in this story, and that’s just the way it sometimes goes. To be fair, i didn’t spend a lot of time downstairs Thursday, and I’m not all that observant.

So in light of our after midnight bedtime, and the whole almost burning the house down and endangering 4/5 of my children (plus Mags! ✅), I let the girls stay home from school. I needed my babes close. We all slept in and then before Chris headed to work we marveled over the events of the night again. Gah!

After such spectacular momming, I decided just to keep up the good work and get out of our stinky, cold house and escape to one of our happy places, the movies. We saw Smallfoot and it was cute and silly and funny. Perfect antidote.

Matt was going to stay in WV Friday and hike and sightsee, but he ended up getting up at 5am and getting going. He wanted to be close to his babes too. And we were all so happy to see him.

My dad asked why the hero didn’t get to see a movie with us, and we decided he deserved some deluxe tacos. So when D went to Sephie’s party, Matt and I headed out to return his rental car, pick up a few things from Wally (smoke remediation spray for one thing), and lastly take the hero his taco. Love this amazing (hero) boy. Hope he knows how much! (I tell him all the time, but you know)

The electrician came by. He determined the problem was faulty wiring by the builder. The wire wasn’t properly coiled, and over years this has been the weakest outlet. Then on top of that, the malfunction never tripped the breaker. It could have been so bad, have I mentioned that?

I have praised God again and again. I want my kids to know, even when things are crappy (like adding another home safety improvement project to an already mile long list of home improvement projects)  that God is soooo good. I want them to see the blessing before the garbage. I want them to see Heavenly Father’s hand everywhere in their lives.

As we chatted again about how much Heavenly Father loves us, Addie made a really great connection. We keep every Christmas card sent to us and each Sunday we pick a new card and pray for that family all week. Except some years  we’re out of town for 8+ weeks and we get behind so we pick 3 families to pray for. Anywho... among the 3 families we picked last Sunday was none other than the Matt and Michelle Ray’s. We were very intentionally praying for our family all week, and I think that added to the blessings of protection we received. And Addie’s the one that put that together, I just love that sweet, spiritual girl.

Just the girls

Last week Matt had the opportunity to attend a conference for work in WV. He doesn’t often go out of town for work, so it was exciting for him. He went hiking at Big Schloss a couple times.

He works so hard and supports us in all of our busy endeavors, so I was glad he was able to enjoy some down time, and WV is beautiful.

This little first grader is a hard working lady. She’s so easy with school work. She knows all her sight words for the 1st quarter (probably for the year) and does her math homework quickly and by herself. It’s fascinating to see how differently the kids learn and the different ways they are smart.

Miss D also got to be on the morning news for SOAR’ing behavior with some classmates, and Mrs. G posted this adorbs screenshot on Dojo. 😍

Also, reading buddy cuteness. So glad all the girls love school.

And one more for good measure. I love Class Dojo.

I had grand plans for my time while Matt was our of town. I was going to put the girls down to bed and paint my heart out, but then not so much. I was so tired that I ended up tidying up and then working in my room each night. Not the most productive, but everyone survived (barely, but we’ll get to that later). Frankie did Gymnatsics on Wednesday and actually landed several cartwheels on the beam.

D and I went birthday shopping for Sephie while the girls were decorating Halloween cupcakes and cookies at A Days.  And it was also Res Ribbon Week, but our themes were pretty lame this year, we didn’t even have my fav ‘crazy hair day.’ Thursday was career day, so Frankie twinned with her teacher - black pants with flat black slip one, button down shirt, and bun. The eyeball cupcake was my fav.

This takes us to early Thursday. Duh, duh, duh...

More highlights from last week

Last week Laura watched the girls and brought them to church while Matt worked and I went to Ward Council. We traded cars and I left my purse in her car, so she dropped it off and hung out after church for awhile. D pounced and was all “want me to read you a book?” Laura’s a good friend.

On Tuesday the boy, the big girl, and I got new military ids. Chris helped Addie know where to sign.

Her first military id! I clearly remember getting mine when I turned 10, and now here we are again.

That night we went for a bike ride to check out the decorations around our neighborhood. Just look at how spooked Addie is.

It was a fun night, we definitely need to do that again.

Frankie and I are still working hard tutoring.

Addie went to MakerSpace Thursday to see me, but it was my week off, Oopsie.

The Schoeny boys came over after school on Friday and they put together a fun airplane.

After they left we went to see Goosebumps 2. Laney loved it, Addie was a little scared, and Frankie ran out of the theater at one point because she’d spooked herself. Then walking out of the theater Frankie asked to see it again, then driving home D said “thanks a lot for taking me, now I’m going to have nightmares.” You just can’t win with these crazies.

Horseback

Laney started horseback riding lessons and Addie started her 2nd year in September. They love it! Laney loves little Minnie Pearl, and Ms. Christina let her brush Minnie’s mane and tail.

Addie got S’more ready.

Christina asked D to kiss Minnie, and D tried and tried, but Minnie wasn’t cooperating too well.

Lanes got to walk Minnie around while Addie rode. She was in 7th heaven! She thought she was such hot stuff.

Addie looks so professional!

She stood on the horse! What???

While Laney did her lesson, Addie got to walk Minnie.

Happy little 6 year old.

Addie even got Minnie to do a few jumps. I think she even surprised herself.

I’m so grateful to have found a great barn and patient teacher. The girls love it and I think it’s so good for them.

Trick or Treating on the Square

Yesterday was a busy day. Quentin’s baptism was at 10 and we were happy to support our friends. Then at 3 we went Trick or Treating on the Square for the 10th year. Villains!

I always like to go early to beat the crowds, but this year, even though we were 10 minutes early, it was already crowded! I even checked to make sure I got the times right. It was crazy busy!

We spotted a Snow White and I had to. #creepy She had her husband get a picture too, so that made me feel less creepy.

These chics. 😂

We forgot Frankie’s red gloves and pearls, but she still looked great.

Her face! She was super stoked to wear makeup and she pulled this face every time. Every.time.

Love this nut!

The Trunk or Treat started at 6, so I made chili and cupcakes as soon as we got home and headed out for more fun. Nola set it up to be a true chili cook off with small cups to sample all the chili’s and voting from all that cared to. Matt and I worked together and filled our small cups and shared. There were some yummy chili’s!

These 3 cute friends. 💕

After the costume parade picture. What a bunch of cuties!

We love this time of year and love dressing up and love our ward family.
